The number of years coaching & hours of coaching.

Some coaching brands churn out “qualified coaches” after a very brief training period and with no real experience in the field.

Anyone can call themselves a coach.

A great coach will have the relevant experience in the relevant industry and will have been assessed and accredited by leading organisations such as the ICF (International Coaching Federation). Ask how long clients stay with the coach and ask for evidence.

The number of years business experience prior to becoming a coach

The job title and level of management achieved while working in different sectors

Check out the work history of the coach. What do you see that gives you confidence that there is the depth and breadth of experience to support the coaching skills set. How much experience of leading teams and creating results can you see?

The split across public sector or private sector work experience

How relevant is the sector’s experience and can you see the relevant background and level of understanding required?

The specific coaching qualifications & training

How credible are the organisations behind the coaching and training qualifications? Explore the reputation and social proof attributed to the accreditation mentioned in the coach’s profile.

Once you feel satisfied with your research findings then always ask the coach to provide contact details of previous or current clients so that you can discuss their experiences with the coach.

A great coach will be worth their weight in gold.
